CORDO, GR – A faulty electrical circuit was the cause of a Friday morning house fire in the Eastern Gardens neighborhood of Cordo, which left one woman dead, an investigation has concluded. The Cordo Fire Department, in conjunction with Provincial investigators assigned to the case, determined the cause of the fire, according to Cordo Fire Captain Christopher Maxwell. Captain Maxwell emphasized the dangers of overloading electrical outlets, which can overheat and cause a fire. “Heavy-duty appliances, such as air conditioners, space heaters and microwave ovens should never be plugged into power strips or extension cords,” he said. “Many fires are started this way every year.” As summer approaches, more people will be using air conditioners. Maxwell emphasized that it is crucial that heavy-duty appliances are plugged directly into a dedicated outlet that is served by a circuit breaker with the correct amperage. Heavy-duty appliances should be the only unit plugged into the outlet, as using the other plug may overdraw the circuit. Drapes, clothing, furniture, and bedding should be kept clear of the outlet, according to Maxwell. Anyone with questions or concerns about this case should contact the Cordo Fire Department.
